about

Recorded during the 2020 Pandemic, this is the first ever studio release by the NYC Brunettes.
An astute rock music reviewer might describe this as "bare-knuckle CBGB era, guitar based new wave punk rock." But hard hitting power-pop played by veteran rockers is only part of the story here.
With this recording, the Brunettes keep up their 43 year tradition of being in your face, in your ears and elusive at the same time.
Although the band has a full arsenal of songs going back to 1978 from which to draw, on this CD-only release the feature song is "Persistence". Written by Joe Romano in 2019, it shows a musical maturity in both songwriting and delivery. Nihilism, conceit and candid descriptions of illegal substance abuse and Carter era debauchery are pushed aside as Joe reflects on many of the challenges, both personal and universal, of getting through adult life. As the song easily holds onto the unmistakable late 1970's New York City sound that anchors the Brunettes' music, it also somehow manages to jump the next few decades to give post-pandemic listeners something solid to relate to. With it's non-preaching optimism, Joe tells the story for many of us of our dealings with the constant challenges that life has brought us, and continues to bring. Not necessarily good or bad, this is much more of an observational view from an active participant in life itself. After the final crashes of the song subside, it's back to Brunettes' tradition with "Chemical Reaction".
Dating to 1978, with it's angular rhythms, relentless lead guitar, and solid rock drumming, the song's protagonist declares in a candid delivery about his 'strange attraction to some things when other people stay away'. Similar themes of blatant substance abuse continue in "Use Once and Destroy", but this time with something of a more likely positive resolve 'I had my thrill/ it became too much for me'. Again, non-judgmental, and with barely a rock sneer, or even a wink and nod by the singer, the listeners themselves get to decide how much tongue in cheek should be taken with these last two rock crushers.
